Inspired by the surrounding natural environment, Ebetsu Tsutaya Books, also known as A Forest Library, is a commercial facility that goes beyond selling goods. It is a place that strives to create and nurture a culture. The founder of Tsutaya Books had a vision to "create places where people gather," and this vision is reflected in the design of Ebetsu Tsutaya Books as a response to the Slow-Life theme.
The bookstore is divided into three blocks, each assigned a specific theme: "Mind," "Life," and "Food." The interior spaces are carefully configured to offer visitors a framed view of the forest and a sense of unity. The use of raw materials, such as locally produced bricks, concrete finished flooring, exposed structural steel, and furniture made with wood and steel, creates a tranquil atmosphere that harmonizes with the natural surroundings.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was the need to restrict the volume of the structure spanning 140 meters. To achieve this, the three blocks were given five zones by displacing their plan and layout. This not only reduced the overall volume but also created a unified group that attracts more people. The exterior finish material consists of bricks from three local companies, which are expected to age beautifully over time.
Completed in August 2018, Ebetsu Tsutaya Books has become more than just a bookstore. It has become a central part of the local community, offering a wide range of events and activities to contribute to the local culture. With nearly 50 events planned each month and over 500 throughout the year, the bookstore has surpassed its role as a mere commercial facility and has become a hub for cultural exchange.
The project, which started in April 2016, showcases the dedication and creativity of the design team, including Hikohito Konishi, Yujin Sato, and Culture Convenience Club Company, Limited. Their vision to create a Forest Library that promotes a Slow-Life lifestyle has been realized through the use of innovative design techniques and a deep understanding of the local culture.
Ebetsu Tsutaya Books has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. Ebetsu Tsutaya Books has truly made a mark in the world of architecture and design.
